A Complete Guide to Home Energy Storage Battery Maintenance
In an era of ever-increasing energy demands, home energy storage batteries are becoming an important tool for modern households to reduce electricity costs and achieve low-carbon living. Whether it’s to cope with unexpected power outages or to work in conjunction with solar systems for green electricity, the stable operation of energy storage batteries depends on scientific maintenance and upkeep. Proper maintenance not only extends battery life and improves performance but also ensures household electricity safety.
Today, we will discuss how to perform daily maintenance on home energy storage batteries to ensure that clean energy powers your home more sustainably and reliably.
Why is energy storage battery maintenance necessary?
- Slowing down battery capacity degradation
Energy storage batteries naturally degrade in capacity during long-term charging and discharging cycles. Good maintenance (such as maintaining a suitable temperature and avoiding overcharging and over-discharging) can significantly slow down the aging process and extend the service life.
- Improving system safety
Batteries are energy-intensive devices, and improper use can lead to overheating or thermal runaway, leakage, swelling, or even fire. Maintenance helps to identify potential risks in advance, ensuring personal and equipment safety.
- Maintaining charging and discharging performance
Over time, the internal resistance of the battery increases. Regular inspection and maintenance can optimize the battery’s operating status, maintain good charging and discharging efficiency, and thus improve overall energy utilization.
- Meeting warranty and compliance requirements
Some battery products require regular inspections, maintenance, or logging of operation records as part of their warranty terms. Neglecting maintenance may result in the loss of warranty rights.
Common Types of Energy Storage Batteries
• Lead-acid batteries
Lead-acid batteries are a mature type of battery, with a low cost, making them suitable for budget-conscious home users. They are not very sensitive to temperature changes and are less prone to thermal runaway. However, they also have significant drawbacks, including a relatively short cycle life, typically 300–500 cycles. They require high maintenance, needing regular fluid replenishment (the electrolyte evaporates and is consumed during charging and discharging). They contain lead in their raw materials, requiring proper handling during recycling to avoid environmental pollution.
• Lithium batteries
Lithium batteries have a high energy density, smaller size and weight compared to lead-acid batteries; high conversion efficiency, up to over 99%, and excellent charging and discharging performance; and are relatively easy to maintain. Although their initial cost is higher, their longer cycle life (over 2000 cycles) makes them a good investment in the long run. Furthermore, lithium batteries do not contain heavy metals such as lead and mercury, posing a low risk of environmental pollution, making them the mainstream choice for modern home energy storage.
DeltaX’s energy storage battery products use lithium iron phosphate battery cells, which have undergone rigorous testing, including 1/5 life cycle testing, puncture, extrusion, drop, high and low temperature, overcharge and over-discharge, and concentrated salt water immersion tests, demonstrating excellent thermal stability and safety.
How to maintain energy storage lithium batteries?
- Temperature Environment Management
When choosing a battery, please check that the product’s operating temperature range matches the local climate to ensure a scientifically sound installation plan. In extreme weather conditions, the product’s operating temperature environment needs to be managed.
During high summer temperatures, regularly clean the battery box vents and cooling fans to prevent dust from blocking and affecting heat dissipation. The BMS will activate power reduction protection to avoid full-load charging and discharging in extreme heat.
During low winter temperatures: If the local winter temperature is low, choose a battery with an automatic heating function.
DeltaX’s 9.6/19.2kWh high-voltage single-cell batteries can be customized with a heating film version, allowing them to operate normally even at -20℃. If the battery does not have a heating module, stop charging at low temperatures and resume charging after the temperature rises, or take insulation measures (such as insulation cotton or electric heating tape). Battery activity is lower in winter, so the SOC should be monitored frequently to avoid deep discharge or overcharging.
- Charging and Discharging Status Monitoring
Regularly check the battery level, SOC status, and abnormal charging and discharging records to avoid prolonged overcharging or over-discharging.
The DeltaX PC software provides users with convenient remote monitoring functions, allowing users to view the battery’s operating status in real time, including key parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature, and receive real-time alerts to promptly address potential problems.
- Appearance and Wiring Inspection
Regularly inspect the battery’s appearance for any signs of swelling, leakage, or corrosion; check if the terminal connections are secure and free from signs of burning.
If any of the above conditions are present, do not attempt to disassemble the unit yourself. Report the issue to the installation team immediately and coordinate a time for a professional to come and address the problem.
- Long-Term Storage Recommendations
When storing batteries, control the battery’s SOC to approximately 25%~50%. A charging and discharging cycle should be performed every 6 months of storage.
