How to understand “Inverter has 4 built-in independent MPPTs” ?

When reading product data, we often see that an inverter can support N MPPTs. What exactly does this number of MPPTs refer to?

What is MPPT?

MPPT is an abbreviation for Maximum Power Point Tracking, one of the core technologies used in photovoltaic systems (such as solar power generation systems) to improve energy conversion efficiency.

The output characteristics of a solar photovoltaic array are non-linear. Its output is affected by solar irradiance, ambient temperature, and load. Only at a certain output voltage value can the output power of the photovoltaic array reach its maximum value. At this point, the operating point of the photovoltaic array reaches the highest point of the output power-voltage curve, called the maximum power point (MPP). To effectively utilize solar energy, maximum power point tracking of photovoltaic power generation is particularly important.

Maximum power point tracking efficiency refers to the ratio between the maximum solar power actually tracked by the MPPT controller and the theoretical maximum obtainable power. It is used to measure the quality of its tracking capability. The higher the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) efficiency, the higher the power generation utilization rate of photovoltaic (PV) modules. High-quality MPPT controllers on the market generally achieve efficiencies of 98% or higher. Currently, Hinen products achieve a maximum power point tracking efficiency of 99.9%.

What is the role of MPPT?

What does the number of MPPTs on an inverter represent?

The number of MPPTs (Maximum Power Point Trackers) on an inverter directly reflects its ability to finely manage photovoltaic input, significantly impacting system efficiency, module placement flexibility, and shading adaptability.

The number of MPPTs an inverter has indicates how many photovoltaic arrays’ maximum power points it can independently track.

Benefits of supporting multiple MPPTs:

• Higher power generation efficiency: Each module can operate independently, preventing shading or mismatch from affecting other modules.

• More flexible installation: Suitable for multiple orientations, tilt angles, or roofs.

• Better compatibility: Can connect to modules of different types, specifications, or capacities (note voltage and current matching).

• Less impact from failures: A problem in one module does not affect the operation of other modules.

When purchasing an inverter for home use, how should you choose the MPPT configuration?

DeltaX Inverter Multi-MPPT Solution

The Delta X series 15kW/25kW integrated inverters and E-series balcony systems all feature inverters with four independent maximum power point tracking (MPPT) circuits; the 12kW single-phase low-voltage inverter has three independent MPPT circuits. These high-performance, highly flexible products are particularly suitable for complex rooftop scenarios with diverse module orientations, partial shading, or the need for compatibility with different PV module sizes. By independently optimizing the power generation status of each string, efficiency losses caused by environmental factors can be significantly reduced, maximizing the overall power generation benefits of the system.
